Getting to Know GenNext Member Johnny Kidd

Name:  Johnny Kidd

Where do you work? What do you do?
Currently I work for Saint Louis University as the compliance manager for federal and industry sponsored research activity. However, I just accepted a similar position at UCLA beginning in March.

How long have you lived in St. Louis? Where were you before?
I’ve lived in St. Louis since 2005. I’m from Kansas City, though I went to Mizzou and lived in Columbia for a couple more years after undergrad.

How did you get involved with GenNext?
I heard about it through my employer’s annual giving campaign to the United Way. In addition to financial support, volunteering seemed like another way to give back to the community.

What has been your favorite GenNext event?
One of the most memorable and enjoyable events was playing board games with the older residents at the Mary Ryder Home. I thought I was competitive until I played Bingo with those ladies — they don’t mess around.

Why is volunteering important to you?
I remember as a kid watching my dad mow our elderly neighbor’s lawn. She never asked my dad for help, but the apple pies she brought over was a sure sign of her appreciation. As an adult, I’ve longed for that sense of community. Not that I’ll ever deny an apple pie (or brownies), but knowing that my help accomplishes a need for my community is rewarding in itself.

Besides being involved with GenNext, what do you like to do in your free time?
I spend a great amount of my time (and money) on music. Listening to new and old artists, going to concerts, playing in a band (Jon Hardy and the Public — shameless plug) and looking for the latest gear and other vintage instruments has been an expensive hobby lately.

What is your favorite new restaurant in St. Louis?
That’s a tough one…how about my favorite established restaurants? Best Cheeseburger – O’Connells. Best Pizza – Blackthorne. Best Fast Food – Lion’s Choice. Best Breakfast – Rooster’s Slinger. Best Food Truck – Guerrilla Street Food. Best Dessert – Schlafly’s Sticky Toffee Pudding. I do exercise.

Do you have or have you had a nickname? What’s the story behind it?
Johnny Lee Kidd, Jr. is my birth name, so I guess “Johnny Kidd” seems nicknamed enough. Folks often say my first and last name together like they’re talking about a superhero. I have no special powers, though.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
To balance out my terrible diet, I run marathons. I’ve completed 10 full marathons, five of them in 2013. I ate a lot in 2013.

Christmas or Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving.
