A Personal Legacy
For many people, philanthropic giving is a lifelong commitment that provides both personal satisfaction and financial benefits.
Since 1922, we have invested more than $1.8 billion into this region because of generous donors like you. Now, through the United Way of Greater St. Louis’ Planned Giving Program, you can give a general endowment gift that benefits you and your family, while ensuring vital health and human service programs are available for generations to come.
What is a planned gift?
A charitable planned gift is the result of careful and thoughtful structuring of one’s estate to benefit one or more charitable organizations. Such a gift is commonly asset-based rather than from current income and often involves a planning process utilizing the services of legal and financial professionals; i.e., estate and tax-planning attorneys, accountants and investment advisors.
Planned gifts can be revocable (as in a will bequest) or irrevocable (as in a charitable gift annuity. Both have tax implications.
Ways to give a planned gift
A planned gift can be given in many ways, including cash, charitable trusts, life insurance, retirement plans, bequests, appreciated property, charitable gift annuities and donor advised funds. For more information, download the planned giving brochure.
Caring for the community and other benefits
United Way of Greater St. Louis has responded to the changing needs of the community since 1922. With your gift, we can continue to care about the needs that affect our community for years to come. We care about:
- Preventing illness and promoting wellness
- Protecting children and strengthening families
- Promoting healthy minds and behaviors
- Meeting basic and emergency needs
- Keeping citizens safe
- Nurturing children and youth
- Promoting financial stability and independence
- Building strong neighborhoods and communities
In addition to planting a seed that will continue to grow for generations to come, there are financial incentives that may apply to planned giving:
- Provide for tax-free or tax-advantaged accumulation of assets for charity and/or heirs
- Can increase current and/or future after-tax cash flow
- Can facilitate tax-advantaged transfer of wealth to heirs or other beneficiaries
- Can reduce or eliminate estate shrinkage due to taxes
Endowment members and Legacy Society
Donors who have chosen to include United Way of Greater St. Louis in their wills or other estate plans are honored and recognized as members of the Endowment Program and Legacy Society.
The Endowment Program honors people who are allowing their caring to continue through a planned gift donation. Additionally, a contribution to the Legacy Society will allow your gift to perpetuate for generations. Simply let us know if you have remembered United Way for the future, and your name will be added to the list of others who have provided planned gifts and will be included in future organizational publications and materials as appropriate.
