GenNext is the next generation of young professionals who contribute to and give back to the community with the goal to make St. Louis a better place.
Last year my wife and I welcomed our own “next generation” into the world when our daughter was born. It was the greatest moment of our lives. She has brought my wife and me so much happiness, joy and excitement.
While our daughter has given us so much, we will pass onto her many useful and lifelong lessons. One of the most important lessons we will teach our daughter is the importance of contributing to and giving back to her community.
GenNext has provided me the opportunity to give back to the St. Louis community in ways I would never have imagined. I have learned valuable lessons from these opportunities that I will never forget and will pass along to my daughter, some of which included:
- Moving and organizing Christmas trees at the Delta Gamma tree lot,
- Spending time with senior citizens,
- Organizing and moving books for a charitable book sale,
- Playing video games with kids at the Women’s Safe House,
- Sorting clothes at the Crisis Nursery,
- Bowling with St. Louis ARC,
- Completing artwork with St. Louis ARC,
- Volunteering at a Halloween party for kids,
- Sorting and organizing donated clothes for a resale shop,
- Helping revitalize the landscaping and a playground with over 50 other volunteers.
Without GenNext I would have never had the opportunity to give back to the community in so many diverse ways or to meet so many fantastic people. This organization has truly impacted my life in a way that I will always cherish.
Sadly, this is my third and final term as a GenNext steering committee member. Before I leave, I want to say thank you.
Thank you to my fellow steering committee members. I will always cherish you and consider you friends. It has been great to make so many new friends who also want to give back to the community. You all have hearts of gold.
Thank you to the organizations that work with GenNext. I have learned more from you and you have given me more than you will ever know. Your work helps make the St. Louis community a better place.
Last, but not least, thank you to GenNext and United Way of Greater St. Louis. You gave me the opportunity to pass along important lessons on giving back to the community to my own next generation. Perhaps in 20 years my daughter will be volunteering with GenNext as the next generation of young professionals working to make St. Louis a better place.
Chris is a partner at the law firm Butsch Roberts & Associates. He completed law school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. After moving to St. Louis with his wife, Chris decided he wanted to give back to the St. Louis community and started volunteering with GenNext. He enjoys GenNext because it is a great way to give back to the community, meet other young professionals and make lasting friendships.
